The O's lost for the first time in 2012. No one is going to win all 162 and the pitching didn't work like it needed to against a patient Yankees line up. But the beginning of what could have been an 8th inning rally was derailed by horrible officiating by the home plate umpire during the lead off at bat by Nick Markakis. Nick worked the count to 3-1 and took ball 4, only for it to be called strike 2. Nick, who I have only seen openly complain once about ball/strike calls (his infamous ejection by Jeff Nelson in August 2010), had some words with home plate umpire Paul Schrieber. He fouled off the next pitch and then walked again on ball 4, which was called strike 3 despite being clearly outside. Jim Palmer was audibly displeased with both of these calls. O's manager Buck Showalter had to physically push Nick away from Schrieber to keep him in the game. Matt Wieters singled later in the inning. Mark Reynolds followed with a single. What should have been the beginning of the O's putting together something was ended immediately by in-ept umpiring.
Something needs to be done about this. Umpires need to take responsibility when they are wrong.
On a side note, I hope the Yankees throw at Bob Andino tonight. Bring it on!
