The O's are struggling. It's a fact. Brian Matusz was the bright light over the weekend filled with bad pitching (Jake), bad fielding (a lot), and bad luck (Chen's bad first inning on Friday Night).
But the sky is not falling. Some people get way too worked up about losing streaks, partially because of the last 14 years but also because of the "must win now" culture that is prevalent all over the world in every sport.
At the beginning of the season, a .500 finish would have made most fans ecstatic. But the amazing start to the season lead to increased expectations, even if those expectations most likely won't be fulfilled.
But make no mistake about it. This team, with Zach Britton, Brian Roberts, and Nolan Reimold all on the verge of coming back, is very capable of reaching the .500 goal. That would be a 12 game increase over the 2011 season, which would be exceptional and lead to a 2012-2013 off season where more pieces can be added.
There is no need to be disappointed with a .500 finish. And as we saw on September 28, 2011, the baseball gods have a lot of tricks up their sleeves. There is a lot more baseball to be played. I suspect we will see a lot of positives to even out the negatives that the Orioles are facing now.
